What is Obesity?
What is Obesity?
Obesity is one of the chronic disease that is in 100% need of medical treatment and prevention. Obesity is defined as excess tissue around the human muscular system. A fat cell is an endocrine cell and adipose tissue is an endocrine organ. If a person's bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese.
What are the causes of obesity?
As you can see here obesity is one of the leading disease that pushes against other diseases to move forward in your health. Obesity is not a good thing especially when a country or continent is categorised as the highest on obesity.
Below here I will be showing my statistical answers for obesity locally and obesity around the world.

What are the causes of obesity?
- The very main factor that people are obese is consuming a lot of calories. The sub factor of it is urbanization. The more the city is being urbanized the more the population is being increased. The population is being increase so agricultural factors too increase. Along with agriculture diseases increase and when diseases increase it causes one of this major disease called obesity.
- With the arrival of technology such as televisions, video games, remote controls, phones, washing machines, cars and other modern convenient devices people tend to live a sedentary lifestyle. The less people occupy themselves with physical activities the less the muscles are occupied leading excess tissue around the body fat.
- Not sleeping enough sleep deprivation may lead to obesity through increased appetite as a result of hormonal changes. If you do not sleep enough you produce Ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. Lack of sleep also results in your body producing less Leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite.
- Endocrine disruptors, such as some foods that interfere with lipid metabolism. This is caused by consuming a type of food that contains fructose a type of sugar in beverages which may cause a metabolic disruption.
- Sometimes obesity may be caused by genetics. A faulty gene called FTO makes every 1/6 people overeat. People who carry the FTO gene variant tend to eat too much, prefer high-energy, fatty foods, and are usually obese. They also appear to take much longer to reach satiety (feeling of being full).
- Coronary heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
- Stroke
- Liver and Gallbladder disease
- Sleep apnea and breathing problems
- Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint)
- Gynaecological problems (abnormal periods, infertility)

Malaysia:
- In Malaysia, 29.1% found the adult population overweight. Among adults who are obese (14.0%), the women tend to suffer from obesity (17:42%) than men (10%).
- Based on culture the Indians have the highest overweight percentage 33.2% followed by Malays 29.8% and Chinese 28.5. This can be due to the food or diet these people eat.
- Malaysia was rated heavyweight at 45.3% of its population, followed by South Korea (33.2%), Pakistan (30.7%) and China (28.3%).
- The Malaysian Society for the study of obesity president Professor Dr Mohd Ismail Noor said that the situation has become more serious and particular due to the fact the children are getting obese too.
- Malaysia is categorised as the sixth in the Asia Pacific region for obesity in South East Asia for both obesity and diabetes.
- Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM) president Dr Tee E Siong said while obesity was not listed as a cause of mortality, it should be considered a disease in Malaysia when “communicating to the public”.
World:
- Right now we are facing a global epidemic about obesity.
- It has become a win-win situation for both Adults and Children. Recent studies shows that 1/10 of the world’s adult population are obese.
- 1.6 billion of the world’s population is overweight and 400 million people are obese.
- The WHO mentioned that in 2015 there will be 2.3 billion people overweight and 700 million obese.
This is my Obesity fitness plan:
10 minutes exercise task
How would an average person use his/her calories in this Activity?
The muscles that will be affected or sprained if not stretched or warmed up properly?
Evaluation: Well this exercise is totally related to obesity because it has different intensity levels. Obese people cannot do much of a high intensity exercise therefore obese people only need to exercise on a low intensity rate or medium intensity rate. Due to their excess tissue around their bodies they cannot move much of their body too much therefore low or medium intensity exercise will be good.
Our routine demonstrated a moderately high intensity routine due to the excess time limit it contained and due to the aerobic moves it contained. Based on my research aerobic fitness is an ideal fitness for Obese people because most of it is cardiovascular and obesity mainly aims for the functioning of the heart therefore the passage between the heart and lungs should be cleared first.
Well the only thing that went well was that we sweat out and we managed to get through the moves exactly. The only thing that did not go well was that the people who we were leading were hesitating too much like they were not comfortable with the moves we had. Most probably the time limit was the problem. Therefore I hope to learn from this and form a better group that understands and works as a team.
- Well an average person’s BMI is normal. Resting heart rate is between 70-80 bpm. Blood Pressure is normal. Therefore the number calories an average man should take is 2000.
- Since our total calorie burnt is 67 an average person would only have to use 67/2000 to do this activity. Although the number of calories here is less, the time limit is the cause that makes it less.
- Time is a limit. If we exceed it we would lose relevant data. Therefore we would like to stay in limit for relevance and reliability. To utilize an average person’s calories in this activity he will also have to focus on fitness components like Flexibility, Muscular strength and endurance, Cardiovascular Strength, Balance and most importantly Body Composition or in general terms BMI.
- Calories are another word for measuring the energy we consume every day. Therefore a man who eats 2000 calories a day would not make much difference in his weight or height based on this activity because it is less than the average calories that should be burnt every day. However the time can make it a little complicated.
- If we burn approximately 70 Calories in 10 minutes we would burn 420 calories in an hour which is a lot. So the ratio is literally quite high. Again, the time is short. Therefore, the average person can rest immediately which will not have a significant effect to the body.
- Well it will have a higher and more intense intensity when there will be more time. However since this is 10 minute short he/she would not be able to experience any intense motion after or during the activity.
The muscles that will be affected or sprained if not stretched or warmed up properly?
- Quadriceps
- Gastrocnemius
- Abdominal Muscle
- Biceps
- Hamstring
- Gluteus Maximus (hip muscle)
- Triceps
- Ankle muscle
